ONBOARD SOS MEDITERRANEE Activities and observations of our rescue ship in the Central Mediterranean

On March 10, Ocean Viking left the port of Marseille, France.

On March 18, Ocean Viking rescues 10 persons from a fibreglass boat 36NM off the Libyan coast.

On the evening of March 18 and again on March 19, Ocean Viking requests a Place of Safety to disembark the 10 rescued persons.

On March 20, Ocean Viking rescues 106 people from an overcrowded rubber boat, 34 NM off the Libyan coast. Ocean Viking sends a third request for a Place of Safety for the now 116 survivors on board.

On March 21, Ocean Viking sends a fourth request for a Place of Safety.

On March 22, ITMRCC informs Ocean Viking of the designation of Augusta, Italy, as a port of disembarkation for the 116 survivors on board.

On March 23, Ocean Viking disembarks 116 survivors in Italy.

On March 24, the Augusta Harbour Master notifies the Ocean Viking of a 14-day quarantine as ordered by the Italian health authorities.

On April 7, the Ocean Viking is granted free pratique by the Port Health Authority of Augusta.

Libyan coastguard patrol vessel 658 instructs Ocean Viking to alter her course and head North.

SEABIRD aircraft overflies the rubber boat and calls Ocean Viking on VHF.

Ocean Viking contacts LYJRCC via satellite phone to report the situation and informs that she is proceeding to the assistance of the persons in distress as per international maritime law.

Distribution of lifejackets is finished. Evacuation of shipwrecked persons to Ocean Viking starts.

Ocean Viking’s RHIBs Easy 1 and Easy 2 are recovered. Ocean Viking resumes patrol.

SEABIRD calls Ocean Viking on VHF and informs no other boats in distress have been spotted by the aircraft in the area.
