This online logbook intends to provide information on the past and ongoing operations of the Ocean Viking. The logbook entries are not updated live but as regularly as possible by our teams who are currently engaged in search and rescue operations at sea.

 

SITUATION RECAP

Last update: 27/04/2021 at 19:39 (All times in UTC + 2 hours/CEST)

– On April 18th, the Ocean Viking leaves the port of Syracuse (IT).

– On April 22nd, the Ocean Viking witnesses the aftermath of a shipwreck that claimed up to 130 lives in international waters in the Libyan Search and Rescue Region. (Find a recap of events here.)

– On April 27th, at 11:45, 236 survivors are rescued from two rubber boats in distress and brought to safety onboard Ocean Viking.

– On April 28th, as the team on the Ocean Viking prepared for the rescue of a rubber boat in distress, the Libyan Coast Guard arrived on scene and intercepted the boat. A second boat in distress that the Ocean Viking was also alerted to was intercepted by the Libyan Coast Guard as well.

– On April 30, Ocean Viking receives instructions to proceed to Augusta, Italy, to disembark the 236 survivors.

– On May 1, Ocean Viking disembarks 236 survivors in Augusta, Italy.

– On May 2, the Augusta Harbour Master notifies the Ocean Viking of a 14-day quarantine as ordered by the Italian health authorities.

M/V MY ROSE informs Ocean Viking via VHF that they received permission from a Turkish navy vessel to proceed towards their final destinations Al Khoms, Libya. Ocean Viking alters her course, heading west.

Ocean Viking on scene, 3NM from M/V MY ROSE. Libyan Coast Guard patrol vessel Ubari not yet arrived. Ocean Viking spots several bodies in the water while standing by in the area.

Ocean Viking has visual on the shipwreck and several bodies in the water in position 33°45.0’N 013°38.0’E.

13:50

M/V AIK leaves the scene and communicates via VHF CH 16 that Libyan Coast Guard patrol vessel UBARI is the coordinator, meanwhile M/T VS LISBETH left the area.

Ocean Viking alters course to the shipwreck. Ocean Viking position: 33 36.2 N 013 24.6 E. 13 NM to the position of the shipwreck.

Frontex aircraft Osprey3 informs M/V MY ROSE and the other vessels of the position of the shipwreck via VHF CH 16 (grey rubber boat in position 33 44.44N 013 37.57E).

Ocean Viking receives an email from Alarm Phone informing that the people on board are now without battery on their Thuraya phone (Case AP 182). The last call was too short to ask for a new position.

As Ocean Viking has not succeeded in finding the first distress case (AP 181), she is now proceeding towards distress case AP 182 and informs relevant authorities. The last known position of AP 182 is 121 NM away from the Ocean Viking’s position.
